The Department of Gender Studies at the Makerere University Institute of Gender and Development Studies recently hosted Dr. Katrin Sowa from the University of Cologne, Germany. Dr. Sowa, who serves in the Department of Anthropology and as Coordinator for Exchange Programs at Cologne, visited Makerere to explore opportunities for academic collaboration between the two institutions.
Her visit marked the beginning of discussions towards a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will support joint initiatives such as postdoctoral research, summer schools, and student exchange programs. This partnership also aims to strengthen grant writing efforts to secure funding for collaborative projects.
In her remarks, Dr. Sowa noted her interest in conducting gender-focused research, an area she highlighted as not yet a major priority in Germany. She emphasized the importance of partnering with institutions in the Global South, recognizing Makerere University as a strong example of impactful collaboration.
The department was pleased to welcome Dr. Sowa, with the Director of the Institute, the Head of Department, and other staff members in attendance to mark this important engagement.
